Reading Recovery At Downe Township Elementary School
History

Reading Recovery was implemented in the Downe Township School District during the 1997-1998 school year.

Purpose

The purpose of the Reading Recovery Program is to promote learning at an accelerated rate.  Reading Recovery students catch up to their classmates and continue learning independently.

Eligibility

Reading Recovery is a short-term intervention program for first graders who find reading and writing difficult.

Program

Students receive one-to-one individual instruction for a daily thirty minute lesson for 12-20 weeks.

Assessment

All first grade students are assessed in the fall and those students who are experiencing the most difficulty with reading and writing enter the program first.

Lessons

Each  day the student reads familiar stories, reads yesterday's new book, works with letters and words using magnetic letters, writes a story, puts together a cut-up story and reads a new book.  The teacher teaches problem solving strategies and gives just the right amount of support to help the child develop good reading and writing strategies.

End of Program

Students are assessed again at the end of their program.  Those who have successfully completed their program are discontinued.  The Reading Recovery teacher continues to monitor their progress in the classroom.  Those students who do not successfully complete their program are recommended for longer term intervention in another program.
